Sucking the Honey from the Rock

Sucking the Honey from the Rock

In the book of Deuteronomy, there is a powerful metaphor that speaks to the resilience and faith required in our journey through life: "He made him suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock" (Deuteronomy 32:13, KJV). This imagery of finding sweetness in the most unlikely places resonates deeply with the challenges we face today. Just as the Israelites were sustained by the miraculous provision of honey and oil from seemingly barren rocks, we too can find sustenance and strength in the most difficult circumstances.

Life often presents us with challenges that seem insurmountable, like trying to suck honey from a rock. We face hardships, disappointments, and trials that test our faith and resilience. But just as the Israelites trusted in God's provision, we too can trust that He is guiding us on the right path. Even when the way seems hard and the future uncertain, we can find comfort in the knowledge that God is with us, providing for our needs and leading us to a place of abundance.

Sucking the honey from a rock is a metaphor for finding the good in the hard situations, for trusting that God is putting us on the right path even when it seems difficult. It reminds us to have faith that God knows what we need and will provide for us in ways we may not expect. Just as honey and oil flowed from the rocks for the Israelites, so too can blessings flow from the most unlikely sources in our lives.

So, let us embrace the challenges we face with faith and courage, knowing that God is with us every step of the way. Let us trust in His provision and guidance, and be open to finding the sweetness in the most unexpected places. For just as the rocks yielded honey and oil for the Israelites, so too can our trials yield blessings and growth if we stay the course and trust in God's plan for us.

As a lot of you know, I wear many hats, but my main hat is being a stay at home parent that homeschools a house full of kids, my days are filled with the hustle and bustle of family life. From the moment I wake up until the kids are finally asleep, there's always something to be done, whether it's cooking meals, helping with homework, or just keeping the chaos at bay. And in the midst of it all, there are always dishes to be washed and laundry to be done.

One day, as I stared at the pile of dirty dishes in the sink, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed. The same feeling crept up when I looked at the mountain of laundry waiting to be washed, dried, folded, and put away. But, with a deep breath, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.

As I scrubbed and sorted, washed and folded, I couldn't help but think about how these tasks were like life sometimes. We're faced with challenges that seem insurmountable, like trying to suck honey from a rock. But, just like the Israelites found sweetness in the most unlikely places, I found a sense of accomplishment and pride in tackling these chores, knowing that they were necessary for my family's well-being.

And just like with the dishes, as I worked my way through the laundry, I found a rhythm, a sort of peace in the repetition. There was a satisfaction in seeing the pile shrink, in knowing that I was taking care of my family in a small but important way.

By the time I finished the last load of laundry and put away the last dish, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I had tackled the hard things, the seemingly endless tasks that come with raising a large family. And in that moment, I realized that sometimes, the hard things are worth doing. They may not always be fun or glamorous, but they're necessary. And in the end, they can bring a sense of satisfaction and pride that makes it all worthwhile.

So, to all the parents out there facing their own mountains of dishes and laundry, take heart. In the midst of the chaos, there is sweetness to be found. And who knows, you might even find a little bit of joy in the process, just like I did.
